The Artistic Journey of Gemma Allcock

My journey into the world of art began at a young age. Growing up Nottingham, I was always surrounded by Art materials, which played a significant role in shaping my creativity. I especially loved to draw cartoon characters and Manga.

Early Influences

My early influence was actually my secondary school Art teacher. She really believed in my creative side. She advised me to go to art and design collage to continue with my strengths.

Education and Training

To hone my skills, I pursued formal education in studying a BTEC ND in Graphic design. I studied under experienced tutors who taught me the intricacies of color theory, composition, and technique. This foundation allowed me to develop my unique style, characterized by soft hues and delicate details 15 years later when I picked up a pencil again, after choosing a different career path after completing my collage course. That's when all the social media Artists became my new teachers in the world of pet portraits and wildlife.

I started with graphite pencils, then coloured pencil then fell for pastel pencils. I then decided to specialise in pastel pencils.

Making it a perfect career to fit around my children after enjoying 8 full time Mummy years with then. I still get to do school runs, be their when they are unwell and enjoy the school holidays together.

The Allure of Pastels

Pastels are a medium that offers a unique blend of vibrancy and softness. I am particularly drawn to pastels for several reasons:

  • Versatility: Pastels can be used on various surfaces, allowing for endless creative possibilities.

  • Color Range: The wide spectrum of colors available in pastels enables artists to create stunning visual effects.

  • Texture: The soft, chalky texture of pastels adds depth and dimension to artwork.

Techniques and Processes

I employ a variety of techniques to bring my pastel creations to life. Here are some of my favorite methods:

  1. Layering: Building layers of color is essential in pastel work. I often start with a base layer and gradually adds more colors to create depth.

  2. Blending: Using tools like blending stumps or fingers, I smooth out colors to achieve a soft, seamless transition.

  3. Texturing: I incorporates different textures by varying my pressure and using different strokes, adding interest to my pieces.

Inspirations Behind the Creations

I mainly work from peoples photos or choose appropriate photos from Pixabay.com.

Emotional Expression

Art is a powerful medium for expressing emotions. I use my pastels to capture the subjects beauty and character. Whether it's joy, sadness, or nostalgia, my creations resonate with viewers on a deeper level. Memorial portraits have so many different emotions attached to them.

The Creative Process

Creating a pastel artwork is a journey that involves careful planning and execution. Here’s a glimpse into my creative process:

Concept Development

Before starting a piece, I spend time sketching out the outline either by freehand , transfer paper or a grid. I like to use all options. I then considers the colours of pastel pencils to use by studying the subject on the photo.

Choosing the Right Materials

Selecting the right materials is crucial for achieving the desired effect. I use high-quality pastel pencils and paper to ensure my artworks stand the test of time. I believe that investing in good materials enhances the overall quality of my work. Start with what you have and try out all the types available to you and your affordability range. Then gradually build up your stock you don't have to go all out and buy all the expensive full sets.

Showcasing the Art

I believe that showcasing her art is as important as creating it. I have recently started participating in local art exhibitions , where I can connect with fellow artists and art enthusiasts.

Art Exhibitions

Exhibitions provide me with a platform to display my work and share my artistic journey. I enjoys engaging with visitors, discussing my techniques, and explaining the stories behind my pieces. As well as just leaving my work displayed for people to enjoying and purchase.

Future Endeavors

Looking ahead, I have exciting plans for my artistic journey. I aim to explore new themes and techniques, pushing the boundaries of my creativity. Here are some of my goals:

Workshops and Classes

I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with others. I am planning to host workshops where I can teach aspiring artists the techniques I have used over the years. This initiative will not only help others develop their skills but also create a sense of community among artists.

Conclusion

My pastel creations are a testament to my dedication, passion, and artistic vision. Through my work, I invite viewers into my world, sharing stories and emotions that resonate deeply. As I continue to evolve as an artist, we can only anticipate the beautiful creations that lie ahead.

If you’re inspired by my journey, consider exploring your own creativity. Whether through pastels or another medium, art has the power to transform and connect us all.
